Invitation: Book launch of Afdraai na Annabel

The Faculty of Education invites you to the book launch of Afdraai Na Annabel on 15 May 2024, from 17:00-18:30, Auditorium A, Teaching Building, Central Campus, 26 Scanlan Street (download the programme here).

Authored by Ms Rencia van Blerk a Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Afdraai na Annabel is her debut novel which was the manuscript she submitted to obtain a Masters’ degree in Creative Writing with specialisation in Afrikaans under the auspices of Prof Henning Pieterse and Dr Francois Smith at UFS. After completion of her Master’s degree she crossed paths with Marlene Malan at Turksvy Publications.

The novel which follows Annabel who lives in Warrenton, and is seeking peace of mind. She decides to take a road trip with her dog, Wolf. With her caravan in tow she travels the back roads, staying overnight in small towns across the Northern Cape. On her travels she meets people, like Oompie Laars, who enrich her life. Annabel is in search of hope, but will she find hope after what happened in Warrenton?

Speaker’s Bio

Ms van Blerk was born and raised in Jan Kemdorp, Northern Cape. She matriculated in 1985 from Vaalharts High School and furthered her studies at UFS obtaining a BA(Ed) and BA Honours degree in Afrikaans and Nederlands. She started teaching in 1991 at Adamantia High School and moved around until she started teaching at Kimberley Girls’ High School (KGHS) where she has been for the past 17 years. After she retired in 2023 as the Deputy Head at the KGHS, she moved to Sol Plaatje University. Currently she is a Lecturer in Afrikaans in the Faculty of Education.
