SPU community rallies behind rugby team at special meet & greet activation

SPU’s Central Campus was filled with enthusiasm as we hosted a special meet and greet yesterday to celebrate and send off our first-team rugby players to their crucial playoff match against Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) on 12 August 2024.

The event fostered a sense of camaraderie and excitement, providing attendees, including staff, students, and the team’s sponsors – NTLO, The Heights, and MVD Kalahari – the opportunity to engage with the players and take photographs. This special event was made even more wonderful by the attendance of a large contingent from the Griquas who were here to show their support for our team.

The team received a special send-off gift, which was accepted by the captain, Mr Franco Stassen. The event highlighted the strong team spirit and collective hope that our players will represent us well in the upcoming competition.

A victory against TUT will qualify SPU Rugby for the prestigious Varsity Shield competition in 2025, marking a significant milestone in our sporting journey.

As they set off, we extend our heartfelt support and stand united in cheering them on every step of the way.

Go show your Gemmie Fire and continue to make us proud!
