Following SPU’s participation in the Higher Education Facilities Management Association (HEFMA) 2025 Conference, held from 13 to 16 October 2025 at North-West University in Potchefstroom, the University was honoured with two prestigious awards during the conference’s Annual Awards Ceremony. The recognition cemented SPU’s position as a leader in facilities management and infrastructure delivery within the higher education sector.
HEFMA, which represents all 26 South African universities, SADC institutions, 50 TVET colleges and international partners from Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE), Tertiary Education Facilities Management Association (TEFMA) and Leadership in Educational Facilities (APPA), announced SPU as the recipient of both the Best Performing Chapter Award and the Best Performance in Infrastructure Delivery Award.
The Central Region Chapter, which includes institutions from the North West, Northern Cape and Free State provinces, was recognised as the Best Performing Chapter. Under the leadership of Ms Maureen Malaka, Director: Infrastructure Project Management & Facilities Services at SPU, the chapter has distinguished itself through active collaboration, support to peer institutions and consistent knowledge sharing across the facilities management network.
“This recognition reflects our commitment to collaborative excellence and our belief that sharing knowledge strengthens the entire higher education sector,” said Ms Malaka.
SPU’s second award recognised its outstanding performance in implementing and managing its New Built Infrastructure Programme. The University demonstrated excellence in the delivery of quality projects within budget and time, adherence to space and cost norms, and the successful completion of DHET-funded infrastructure initiatives.
These achievements highlight SPU’s continued commitment to excellence in facilities management and infrastructure delivery, reinforcing the University’s role as a forward-looking institution that integrates sustainability, collaboration and innovation into its operations.
