The Sol Plaatje University (SPU) women’s football team is gearing up for a historic moment today as they make their debut in the prestigious Sasol Women’s League. Crowned Frances Baard Regional Champions for the 2024 season, their victory earned them a place in the Northern Cape Provincial League, a progression that signals their readiness for the next level of competition.
The Sasol Women’s League is South Africa’s premier semi-professional women’s football league with over 140 teams across all nine provinces, the league provides vital exposure and competition for thousands of female athletes – and serves as the gateway to the Hollywoodbets Super League, the country’s top-tier league.
SPU will now compete among 18 provincial teams in the Northern Cape, divided into Stream A and B. Their first challenge? A high-stakes derby against Royal Wizards, the reigning provincial champions for the past three seasons. This opening clash, taking place today at 13:00 at the SPU Sports Precinct (South Campus), sets the stage for what promises to be a tightly contested season.
