On Saturday, 7 May 2022, Judge Steven Majiedt, Chancellor of Sol Plaatje University, presided over the University’s largest graduation ceremony since it began operating in 2014. 571 undergraduate and postgraduate students graduated at the first in-person ceremony, since 2019, which was held at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley. There were also 313 viewers online via YouTube.
Qualifications were conferred in two sessions, the first was held in the morning for those graduating from the School of Education and a second session was held in the afternoon for graduates from the School of Economic and Management Sciences, School of Humanities and the School of Natural and Applied Sciences.
Dr Muki Moeng, Dean of the Faculty of Education at Nelson Mandela University, was the guest speaker at the first session. Dr Moeng strives to foster an environment in which both students and staff can critically examine the conditions that hamper and/or improve education. Her ultimate vision is to educate children for a sustainable Africa. Professor Randall Carolissen, Dean of the Johannesburg Business School (JBS), was the guest speaker at the second session. Professor Carolissen is strategically repositioning the JBS as a leading business school, specializing in digital transformation on the African continent.
In his address to the graduands, Professor Andrew Crouch, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Sol Plaatje University, reminded them that they are special in that they are the fortunate few who have achieved a university qualification, but that it comes with the responsibility to contribute towards the further development of South Africa and society in general. He urged them to serve society by liberally giving of themselves, since giving is leadership.
Sol Plaatje University now has over 1500 graduates and through its growing alumni base is expanding its footprint in the SADC region. Graduates from Sol Plaatje University are actively engaged in the progressive transformation of their professions and social environments, they appreciate different world views and incorporate these into their own approaches to problem solving.
The University congratulates its recent graduates on their achievement and welcomes them as ambassadors of the institution.
