SPU to host Kaonafatso ya Dikgomo Farmer’s Day

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences to host Kaonafatso ya Dikgomo (KyD) Famer’s Day event on Friday, 5 September 2025 at South Campus Multipurpose Hall.

The KyD scheme was established to facilitate the participation of smallholder farmers in South Africa’s mainstream agricultural economy. Implemented under the Animal Improvement Act 62 of 1998, the scheme promotes sustainable livestock improvement through the collection and maintenance of accurate animal performance records. These include birth notifications, weaning weights, yearling weights, and 18-month weights, all of which are essential for informed breeding decisions and long-term herd productivity.

In line with this vision, SPU Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, in partnership with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and the Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform (NCDEARDLR) this event focus on capacity building and information sharing. The event will provide a platform for Diploma in Agriculture students to engage with small-scale and emerging farmers, creating opportunities for hands-on learning and the exchange of knowledge.

This collaborative initiative is designed to strengthen the skills of both students and farmers, equipping them with practical tools that support growth, innovation, and sustainable agricultural development in the Northern Cape.
