Sol Plaatje University (SPU) will be hosting the 2023 Astrolab Training Workshop, which will take place from 4 – 8 December 2023 at SPU’s Central Campus. The workshop will be attended by experts, specialists, researchers, academics, and students who will engage to advance astronomy and astrophysics infrastructure and curriculum development.
The Astrolab workshops have been running since 2016, with the Copperbelt University in Zambia being the first host. Thereafter, the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe hosted the workshop in 2017, followed by the University of Zululand in 2018, and University of Venda in 2019. The regional office of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) recognised SPU as the host university for this year’s workshop.
The workshop aims to develop and implement a research tutorial at universities in need of astronomy infrastructure and curriculum, to enable undergraduate students in astronomical sciences to perform real-time observations on a remote telescope and to transform these observations into scientific results.
The Astrolab Training Workshop will not only attract prospective science students to SPU but will also put SPU on the global map.
