Step into history: |haru oms (Nama Hut) at the Heritage Month Celebration 2025

The Faculty of Humanities, in collaboration with Dit is ’n Noord-Kaap Ding (DINK), invites you to the 2025 Heritage Month Celebration. Kindly see programme here.

The annual DINK Colloquium is a multidisciplinary gathering that brings together stakeholders from across the Northern Cape and beyond. This year’s colloquium will celebrate a shared South African heritage, with a special focus on indigenous languages and culture.

A highlight of the programme will be the exhibition of the |haru oms (Nama hut), an ancient mobile home of the Nama people. The |haru oms has shaped a culture that connects with many other indigenous nations, including the San, Tswana, Sotho, Zulu and Xhosa. Its exhibition demonstrates the fluidity of language, culture, customs and traditions in South Africa.

The four-day programme includes cultural dance performances, academic presentations, film screenings, workshops and panel discussions, all centred on celebrating and reflecting on our collective heritage.

Event details:

Date: 29 September to 2 October 2025

We invite staff, students and the broader community to join us in honouring and celebrating our shared heritage.
