From student to postgraduate research advocate, Thami Tebeka is among the SPU alumni who are translating their academic journeys into meaningful institutional impact.
Born and raised in Galeshewe, Kimberley, Thami began her SPU journey in 2019 with a Higher Certificate in Heritage Studies. She has since completed a BA in Social Science, earned an Honours degree in Archaeology, and is now pursuing her Master’s. Her most powerful contribution lies in what she’s doing now: actively shaping SPU’s research culture from within.
Thami currently serves as the Postgraduate Student Representative on the Senate Committee on Research (SCR) – where she advocates for better postgraduate funding, international conference access, and more inclusive research output. Her goal is clear: to ensure that postgraduates are not only supported, but seen in the academic life of the university.

Beyond research, she also serves as the Communication Officer on the Convocation Executive, where she works to bridge the gap between graduates and the university. Since taking office, she’s played a leading role in launching alumni chapters in Kimberley, Kuruman and Upington – creating spaces where SPU alumni can feel a continued sense of belonging and purpose.
Thami’s story is a powerful reminder of what it means to grow, give back, and lead with intention – not only within the university, but in service of its long-term mission.
