This Women’s Month, Sol Plaatje University (SPU) invites you to a powerful celebration of art, science, heritage and womanhood, a space where ancient starlore meets modern discovery, and where women’s voices stand out across disciplines and generations.
SPU will host its annual Women’s Month Celebration with a special tribute to Ouma Katrina Esau, a national treasure and language activist, in recognition of her lifelong work preserving the N|uu language and Khoi-San heritage. Ouma Esau is a living embodiment of the enduring power of women’s wisdom to shape and preserve communities.
The event is presented in partnership with the SKA Observatory (SKAO), the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), and Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
The Women’s Day activities will coincide with the official opening of the Cosmic Echoes: Shared Sky Indigenous Art Exhibition on Saturday, 9 August 2025, forming a collaborative celebration that honours the wisdom of the stars as seen through Indigenous eyes. The event reflects this year’s theme: “Voices of Empowerment: Celebrating Women’s Wisdom, Creativity and Leadership.”
The day will also feature a dynamic panel discussion titled “Cosmic Voices: Women Shaping Tomorrow’s Science Heritage.” The panel will explore the intersection of science, gender, and creative expression, highlighting how women in science are not only advancing knowledge but also reshaping how we communicate and connect with the cosmos, with contributions from leading scientists, artists and educators. Guests will enjoy live art and performance moments, an interactive Reflection and Message Wall, and a guided tour of the Cosmic Echoes exhibition, with reflections from the curator and participating artists.
Opening remarks will be delivered by SPU Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Debra Meyer, followed by insights from Indigenous art curators, astronomers and cultural historians.
The Cosmic Echoes exhibition will remain on display at SPU from 9 August to 13 September 2025, offering extended opportunities for engagement and public visitation beyond the launch event.
