At Sol Plaatje University, the life and legacy of our namesake is not confined to history books. It lives through the spirit, purpose, and people of our institution. Each year, the Annual Sol Plaatje Lecture reminds us that we are the living continuation of Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje’s vision for education, justice and social progress.
This year’s lecture holds special significance. As we commemorate Plaatje’s enduring influence, we are also privileged to have our Chancellor, Justice Steven Majiedt, deliver the lecture titled “Lessons learnt during my career as a judge from the life and legacy of the venerable Sol Plaatje.”
Justice Majiedt, who has served two terms as Chancellor, stands as both a custodian and embodiment of the values Plaatje championed – intellect grounded in humility, leadership rooted in justice and service guided by humanity. His address will reflect not only his distinguished judicial journey but also the profound ways in which Plaatje’s ideals continue to shape thought, character and conscience at SPU.
The lecture forms part of the Sol Plaatje Memorial Weekend, a time when our University pauses to reflect, celebrate and reaffirm its identity as a living testimony to the legacy of a man whose words, courage and intellect changed a nation.
Join us for an evening of reflection and inspiration as we honour both the visionary who gave us our name and the leader who has carried that vision forward with integrity.
