Former SRC president Thabo Moilwa has continued to be an admirable ambassador for Sol Plaatje University (SPU).
Just three years after graduating, Moilwa has climbed the corporate ladder fast and is now a Deputy Headmaster responsible for Special Projects, Finance, Facilities and Extramural Activities at Kimberley Boys High.
Success is not new to Moilwa. As a BEd (Senior and FET phases specialising in Mathematics and Sciences) student, he was appointed by University Sports South Africa (USSA) as the Deputy Chef de Missions of the South African delegation and represented South Africa at the 31st World University Summer Games in Chengdu, China in August 2021.
He was also appointed as a USSA assessor, the first person appointed from the Northern Cape. The appointment included representing the Northern Cape and Free State on the USSA board for three years. He puts his success down to dedication, hard work and determination and explains that patience, passion, and understanding of respect and commitment have been critical too.
Moilwa’s characteristics had translated into a formidable pedigree in sports administration, honed when he began serving in various capacities, including as the SPU SRC President, SRC Treasurer, and sports administrator. One of his standout memories while at University is the appointment of a black Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi. “When I started studying, I never thought we would have one. Today, all this changed, and it has given me a lot of hope for the future of South Africa. It was a dream come true for me.”
Moilwa is now continuing with his studies and pursuing another qualification at SPU.
WE ASKED MOILWA A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS BUSY SCHEDULE AND HIS PHILOSOPHY ON MOTIVATION. THIS IS WHAT HE HAD TO SAY:
What is a typical day like in your life?
Wake up, smile and go to work. My days are busy. I am managing people and problems. I enjoy it, but there are challenges.
Tell us about the challenges you face as a young male in a senior position?
Being undermined and people not understanding your high energy, especially with the changes you intend to bring to the system.
What are your hobbies?
My hobby is sport and nothing more.
What motivational message would you like to share with other young alumni?
Set targets, mid-term and long-term. Always remember to work smart and give your all in everything you do. Your presence matters.
