An unbeaten tournament record, SPU Women’s Rugby Team secures historic Varsity Cup 2027 Qualification

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) has celebrated a landmark achievement as its Women’s Rugby Team emerged unbeaten champions of the 2026 USSA Rugby Women’s B Division Championship, earning promotion to the prestigious Varsity Cup competition in 2027.

Hosted by Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha, the annual USSA Rugby Championships brought together some of South Africa’s top university rugby teams competing for national honours and a coveted place in the Varsity Cup. For the SPU Women’s Rugby Team, the tournament represented an opportunity to showcase their growth, resilience, and determination on the national stage.

The road to the championship was built on months of preparation and sacrifice. Balancing demanding academic responsibilities with rigorous training schedules, players dedicated countless hours to maintaining their fitness and refining their skills. Following an intensive preparation period, a squad of 26 players were selected to represent SPU at the tournament.

Dominant Start to the Campaign

SPU opened their campaign on 29 June against the University of the Witwatersrand. Despite a rushed start and limited time to complete their pre-match preparations, the team quickly found their rhythm and produced a commanding performance. SPU secured a convincing 47-0 victory, setting the tone for the tournament.

The team returned to action on 1 July in their semi-final clash against the University of Limpopo. An early departure and meticulous preparation ensured the players arrived focused and ready for the challenge. The ladies dominated proceedings from the outset, building a substantial lead in the first half before ultimately recording an emphatic 58-0 victory. The result secured their place in the championship final and confirmed qualification for the 2027 Varsity Cup competition.

Champions Crowned

On 3 July saw SPU face Durban University of Technology (DUT) in a championship final contest.

With an SPU made an impressive start, DUT fought back strongly in the second half, but SPU’s determination, defensive discipline, and unwavering commitment proved decisive.

The SPU Women’s team managed to secure a memorable 36-22 victory, clinching the title.

SPU concluded the championship with an exceptional record:

  • Points Scored: 141
  • Points Conceded: 22

Final standings in the Women’s B Division were:

  1. Sol Plaatje University
  2. Durban University of Technology
  3. Tshwane University of Technology
  4. Cape Peninsula University of Technology

Several SPU players received individual honours for their outstanding performances throughout the tournament:

  • Player of the Tournament: Rudeen Beukes
  • Top Try Scorer: Maserati Bangaza
  • Best Forward: Siziphiwe Dubulamanzi and Mulalo Sibasa
  • Best Backline Player: Tyrell Wilson

A Historic Achievement for SPU

The team’s success reflects the dedication and hard work of the players, coaching staff, medical team, support personnel, and university leadership who contributed to the campaign.

As celebrations continue, attention now turns to the next challenge. SPU Women’s Rugby will now enter the 2027 Varsity Cup competition determined to build on this success and continue its rise among South Africa’s elite university rugby teams.
