The School of Economic and Management Sciences will host a thought-provoking public lecture on the topic “Building sustainable retail businesses in a technology-driven environment”, delivered by an international guest from Kristianstad University in Sweden. Retail Business Management is a programme offered at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) and this lecture will provide an opportunity for guests and students to discuss how retailers can bridge the gap between food producers and consumers, and the crucial role they play in ensuring food quality to positively impact consumer health and well-being.
In the South African context, the energy crisis has put pressure on the food supply chain, contributing to rising food prices. As a result, retailers have had to invest in additional energy sources to maintain food safety and quality.
This lecture is part of an ongoing collaboration with the Wholesale and Retail Leadership Chair at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), funded by the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA). It serves as a forum for discussing key issues in the global food retail sector and their implications for our health. The event may also spur possible research ideas and serve as a foundation for further research initiatives and collaborations among the three universities.
Prof Hultman, currently visiting CPUT, is also scheduled to visit SPU to deliver this public lecture on such a pressing subject. This initiative will further strengthen collaborative efforts between SPU and CPUT in our research and teaching in retail management.
