Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is buzzing with excitement as we roll out our Decade Celebrations Digital Hub! This online platform is more than just a webpage – it’s a virtual memory lane where we can showcase SPU’s most monumental milestones, game-changing innovations, and illustrious achievements over the past 10 years to both the SPU family and the global audience.
Although the University officially came to life on 22 August 2013, it wasn’t until February 2014 that we welcomed our pioneering batch of students. To commemorate this significant journey, we’ve launched a year-long Decade Celebrations Campaign, which got off to a rip-roaring start with our 10th anniversary festivities on 22 August 2023. So far, the jubilation has featured an array of vibrant events, including our 10th Birthday Bash, the technicolour Decade Celebration Colour Run, and the unmissable Sol Plaatje Memorial Weekend that included the naming of the courtyard at Luka Jantjie House, the annual Sol Plaatje Lecture, the Founder’s Dinner, the inaugural Chancellor’s Forum and the Annual Standard Bank Chancellor’s Golf Day.
But hold onto your hats! The festivities aren’t stopping there. The calendar for the next 10 months is full of university-wide initiatives and events that promise to keep the celebratory vibes going until August 2024.
Central to our decade campaign is a heart-warming cause – the Lesedi La Afrika Fund. This ambitious three-year initiative aims to gather a staggering R100 million in endowment funds to ensure SPU’s future shines as bright as our students. These funds will fuel scholarships, nurture infrastructure, catalyse social impact projects and provide essential support for our human capital.
To amp up the fundraising, we are hosting a swanky gala dinner on 22 November 2023 at the South Campus Multi-Purpose Hall in Kimberley. Come and experience an unforgettable evening with the award-winning entertainer and musician, Unathi, who will be the host and performer for the night.
