Celebrating continuity: SPU inaugurates 2024/2025 Student Representative Council

On Friday, 1 November 2024, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation, and Postgraduate Studies, Professor Debra Meyer, presided over SPU’s annual Student Representative Council (SRC) Inauguration Dinner. The event was dedicated to formally welcome the incoming SRC for the 2024/2025 term, while also honouring the notable contributions of the outgoing SRC 2023/2024, and celebrating their dedication to enriching campus life and supporting student success.

In her keynote address, Prof Meyer stressed the significance of student leadership to incoming SRC members, emphasising the crucial role SRC members play in the University. She reminded them that in their work they must always strive to advance democratic principles, social justice, and constructive engagement, in alignment with the University’s vision and mission. Prof Meyer urged the incoming members to actively participate in shaping student-related policies and, fostering an enriching and supportive environment. “To the incoming SRC, welcome, and we look forward to watching you step into your role and similarly making a positive contribution to the lives of your fellow students and the university as a whole,” said Prof Meyer.

Prof Meyer also acknowledged the outstanding contributions of the outgoing SRC members, commending their successful fundraising initiatives, financial and accommodation support during registration, policy developments that promoted an inclusive and diverse student culture, and the establishment of the Golden Key International Honour Society chapter at SPU.

Outgoing Deputy President, Mr Dikano Seokwane, expressed gratitude to the University management and staff for their unwavering support, guidance, and commitment throughout his tenure and highlighted some of the 2023/2024 SRC’s key achievements. He urged the incoming SRC members to collaborate closely with management, aiming to surpass 2023/2024 accomplishments and leave a lasting legacy.

Certificates of Appreciation to the outgoing SRC were handed over by Prof Meyer, Ms Nicole Morris, Dean of Student Affairs, and Mr Buntu Mnyaka, Senior Manager: Student Life and Development. This was followed by a ceremonial reading of the Oath of Office by the incoming SRC.

Incoming SRC President, Mx Nonofo Oliphant expressed gratitude, reminding the SRC of their commitment to the students and building a university community that reflects the ambition, voices, and potential of all students. “To each of you: this journey is one we embark on together. I invite you to be active participants, to share your ideas, your challenges, and your hopes for our university. Together, let us build a legacy that future generations of SPU students will look back on with pride—a legacy of growth, inclusion, and bold leadership. Thank you for this opportunity to serve you. Let’s make this a remarkable chapter in the history of SPU, and may we walk together with courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to each other.”
