Wildlife expert, Prof Do Linh San joins SPU

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Emmanuel Do Linh San, a distinguished wildlife ecologist and conservationist. Prof Do Linh San joins the Zoology Department in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences.

Prof Do Linh San brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this position. He holds a doctorate degree in Science (Natural Science) from the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, and a Master’s degree in Natural Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ).

Prof Do Linh San commenced his South African academic journey with consecutive postdoctoral fellowships at Walter Sisulu University (2005-2007) and the University of Pretoria (2007-2008). He joined University of Fort Hare in 2008 as a Senior Lecturer, and soon progressed to be the Department Head (2010-2013) and Associate Professor in 2014. Prof Do Linh San has developed and lectured various undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Ecology, Behavioural Ecology, Ecological Modelling and Research Techniques in Animal Ecology. He has also supervised numerous students and served as an external examiner for several South African universities.

Prof Do Linh San brings an impressive research profile to SPU, having published over 40 scientific articles, 41 book chapters, 48 technical reports, 18 popular articles, 3 wildlife monographs and co-edited 2 journal special issues and 3 books.

As Associate Editor of the African Journal of Wildlife Research (since 2010) and Mammal Study (since 2020), Prof Do Linh San has reviewed over 120 papers for more than 40 international journals and edited nearly 150 book chapters.

At SPU, Prof Do Linh San aims to establish a robust research programme focused on the ecology and conservation of semi-arid and arid land biodiversity. He plans to supervise MSc and PhD students who will enrol in the University’s upcoming postgraduate degrees in biological sciences. Additionally, Prof Do Linh San will contribute to curriculum development, revising existing courses and creating new ones tailored to local needs and research priorities.

Prof Do Linh San’s expertise will significantly enhance our research capacity and academic offerings within the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. We welcome him to the SPU community and look forward to his contributions. With Prof Do Linh San joining SPU, it reinforces our commitment to advancing knowledge and addressing pressing regional environmental challenges.
