Celebrating Excellence in Women’s Sports

Following a consistent and excellent display of skill, sheer determination, and brilliant teamwork the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Ladies Football team emerged as champions of the A Stream in the 2022/2023 Regional Women’s League. The journey to victory was marked by their exceptional performance, securing their spot as one of the most formidable teams in the competition.

Elmien Cloete, Senior Manager of SPU Sport, expressed her excitement about the team’s achievement: “The dedication and commitment of our players have been truly inspiring. Their success [in the Regional Women’s League] reflects their hard work, and clearly shows that the magic of the 2023 Women’s World Cup has certainly rubbed off on our team”.

Throughout eight months, the SPU ladies engaged in intense battles, match after match, participating in 14 games. The regional league, which consisted of two streams – Stream A and Stream B – pitted eight teams against each other in a home and away-format. This rigorous schedule demanded peak physical and mental prowess from the players, as they faced off against some tough and worthy opposition.

The statistics speak volumes about the team’s dominance in the A Stream. Collecting 13 wins out of the 14 games played. A true testament to the SPU Ladies’ skill and remarkable consistency, week in and week out. Their determination was further underscored by a single loss, a mere blip in an otherwise impeccable and near-perfect performance.

This remarkable achievement opens a door of opportunity for the SPU Ladies. Their triumph in the Regional League has earned them the chance to compete in the prestigious Sasol Women’s League. This step not only elevates the status of the SPU Ladies Football side but also brings them closer to their ultimate goal – to qualify and compete in the Hollywood Bets Super League, the pinnacle of South African women’s football competitions.

Cloete went on to emphasise the significance of this achievement for SPU Sport: “The success of our Ladies Football team resonates deeply within our institution. It showcases our commitment to fostering talent and promoting gender equality in sports. We wish them all the best as they now prepare and set their sights on qualifying for the Sasol League.”

The upcoming challenge is set for the team as they prepare to vie for this promotion, scheduled for 9 September. This match holds significant importance as it could mark another crucial advancement for the SPU Ladies Football side. Success here would solidify their reputation as a force to be reckoned within women’s football.
