Current students’ enterprises highlights and impact in 2026

Green Saver is a student-initiated social enterprise focused on developing an innovative, biodegradable, cellulose-based encapsulant material for solar panels using agricultural waste—specifically maize husks—as its primary raw material. The project combines principles of sustainability, materials science, and renewable energy to create an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional solar panel encapsulation materials, while promoting the circular economy through the productive use of agricultural waste.

The project seeks to address two critical challenges simultaneously: reducing agricultural waste and supporting the transition to clean energy by developing locally sourced, sustainable materials for the renewable energy sector. By transforming maize husks into value-added products, Green Saver demonstrates the potential of innovative research to contribute to environmental sustainability, economic development, and climate resilience.

Highlights: Green Saver achieved national recognition after being shortlisted for the 2026 Mr Price Foundation × Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) Waste Innovation Challenge. The project participated in a six-week innovation programme from 29 April to 3 June 2026, receiving mentorship, entrepreneurial training, and expert guidance to strengthen its business model and commercialisation strategy.

Education Access Organisation

(Edu-Access) is a student-led social enterprise dedicated to expanding access to higher education for South African matriculants. Established to address the barriers many learners face during the university and college application process, the organisation assists Grade 12 learners by submitting applications on their behalf to all public higher education institutions through a streamlined process. By charging only a small administration fee, Edu-Access provides an affordable and accessible service that helps learners navigate complex application procedures, reducing the likelihood of missed opportunities due to lack of information, resources, or administrative challenges.

Since its establishment, Edu-Access has continued to grow both in reach and impact by expanding its portfolio of services to better support learners as they transition from secondary school to higher education. In addition to facilitating applications, the organisation offers career guidance, admission information, application support, and advice on available funding opportunities, ensuring that learners are well informed when making decisions about their academic and career pathways.

Highlights: In celebration of the World book day on the 23rd of April, 2026, Edu-Access conducted a successful book day workshop. The successful event was graced by SPU’s Creative Writing lecturer, an author and Poet, Mr Sabata-Mpho Mokae.

On 24 April, 2026, Education Access Organisation activated its service offerings during the Nzalo Careers Expo held at Vuyolwethu Secondary School. The event brought together Grade 12 learners from the local community to explore various career and higher education opportunities. Edu-Access engaged directly with learners, introducing them to the organisation’s services and providing practical guidance on university and TVET college admissions, programme selection, application requirements, and important application deadlines.
