Cyclists come out in numbers to participate in the second annual Vice-Chancellor’s Cycle Challenge

On Sunday, 27 November 2022, Sol Plaatje University hosted its second annual Vice-Chancellor’s Cycle Challenge in association with the Northern Cape Cycling Federation (NCC) and Cycling South Africa (CSA). Avid cyclists lined up at the Oppenheimer Gardens in Kimberley, ready to put their feet to the pedal for the much-anticipated 50km and 105km races.

The University expanded its cycling route from a 43km race in 2021 to two lengthier routes, and introduced a fun 5km race for children thus hosting an event that caters to the whole family.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Cycle Challenge strives towards building and strengthening relations between various stakeholders and community members within Kimberley and its surrounding areas, with the intent of expanding its reach across the country. The initiative is dedicated towards promoting healthy living through the promotion of cycling as an activity for all.

As cyclists made their way to the finish line, there was excitement all around, with spectators coming out and applauding those riding in and cheering them on, including the SPU cheerleaders and our Mascot, Gemmie. “It was a great ride. The wind was a bit strong, but we had fun,” said one of the participants.

The president of the NCC, Mr Kobus Burger took to the podium and congratulated all who participated. “Congratulations to all cyclists that completed the race today! Cycling is no easy feat, but I want to express my heartfelt congratulations to you all for finishing strong and successfully today. I am proud to see the quality of cycling athletes here today,” he said.

Speaking at the event’s award ceremony, Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Andrew Crouch expressed his pride and gratitude to all. “Here at Sol Plaatje University, the Cycle Challenge will remain an important event on the university’s calendar because of its ability to bring the community and families together. I want to express my gratitude to all our sponsors. May we continue to build and foster good relations in support of one another to better the community and promote growth. To all the cyclists, congratulations on completing the race, your endurance is proudly admired.”

The Vice-Chancellor furthermore extended his appreciation to all entrepreneurs that came out in support of the Vice-Chancellor’s Cycle Challenge Flea Market. The Oppenheimer Gardens venue had an array of food stalls, arts and crafts, products and services and entertainment for children that kept the families entertained throughout the day. “Thank you to all cyclists and those running the flea-market stalls.
