Empowering tomorrow’s leaders: Spotlight on SPU’s star at SUSI

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is celebrating the remarkable achievement of one of its own, Lesedi Bonokwane, as he embarks on an international journey of leadership and learning. Selected for the prestigious Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders Program (SUSI) on Civic Engagement, Lesedi is poised to enhance his leadership skills, engage in meaningful cross-cultural exchanges, and deepen his understanding of civic involvement on a global stage.

As a third-year Bachelor of Education student, Lesedi has demonstrated remarkable leadership, serving as Treasurer of the Moroka House Committee and the Education and Transformational Officer of the South African Student Congress Organisation. His commitment to the university community is further evidenced by his roles as a mentor for the Talent Pipeline Programme, Wellness Warrior and Student Assistant.

The SUSI programme, hosted by the Foundation for International Understanding Through Students at Washington University in Seattle, USA, is a dynamic platform for learning about American culture, history, and democratic values. It emphasises the importance of volunteerism and community service, aligning perfectly with Lesedi’s ethos.

Lesedi’s selection for this programme is a personal triumph and a testament to SPU’s commitment to nurturing globally-minded leaders. As he represents SPU on this international stage, Lesedi will be an ambassador of the university’s values, particularly its focus on civic engagement and social responsibility.

Ms Nicole Morris, Dean of Student Affairs, congratulated Lesedi and remarked on his embodiment of the leadership qualities that SPU strives to instil in its students.
