Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) School of Education in partnership with the Sentletse Foundation hosted the 2023 Geography Festival (Geo-Fest) under the theme, “Embracing my world in its entirety and all its diversity”. The event took place on 12 August 2023 at Vuyolwethu High School in Kimberley.
The key goal of the Geo-Fest was to reposition geography as a science subject, as a career choice, and most importantly, to expand the love for Geography as a subject of choice, where learners can confidently express their understanding of the subject content. In addition, the aim of the event was to create a blueprint for prospective high school learners across the Northern Cape to participate in the competition.
The competition consisted of two parts: one where learners showcased their passion for Geography in the form of presentations, and the other segment focused on the learners’ model exhibitions, related to a specific geography concept. They shared innovative ideas addressing problems in areas such as water security, population growth, climate change and global warming. These activities were not only educational but also fun, stimulating active interest in Geography and the environment. The event was highly informative and inspired learners in other areas of life.
A thrilling highlight of the day was an awards ceremony recognising the most innovative presentations and models that displayed a passion for Geography.
