SPU alumni puts Africa on the map at the world university games

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) alumni and former SRC President, Mr Thabo Moilwa, together with TeamSA, arrived in South Africa with 20 medals from the 2021 FISU Summer World University Games in Chengdu, China.

Mr Moilwa was appointed as the Head of Delegation, on behalf of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) team, to lead TeamSA to the tournament that took place from 28 July 2023 to 8 August 2023. The team finished first in the whole of Africa and holds position 19 at a global level.

“It was a huge and scary task, but I am honoured, especially being a graduate from a new university,” Mr Moilwa said.

Born in Ganalagte, a small town in the North-West province, Mr Moilwa led a team compromising of 192 members, competing in 12 sporting codes at the international arena. TeamSA competed in the following sporting disciplines: athletics, badminton, swimming, diving, water polo, fencing, gymnastics, rowing, basketball, tennis, judo, and archery.

He says “persistence, resilience, and patience is the message that I want to send out to all the athletes and TeamSA members because we are now ambassadors of university sport in Africa and the world.”

Mr Moilwa holds a Bachelor of Education degree from SPU and currently serves as the Deputy Headmaster for Corporate Services at Kimberley Boys High School and is also an USSA National Executive Committee member, while pursuing postgraduate studies at his alma mater.
