Grassroots rugby development shines at Floors High School clinic

In a historic first for Floors High School, the coaching team of the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) female rugby team, alongside the Frances Baard Rugby Region, hosted an exhilarating rugby clinic for the school’s newly established girls’ rugby programme. This landmark event not only marks the inception of female rugby at the school but also underscores the commitment to grassroots rugby development in the community.

A key figure in making this clinic possible was Coach Claudia Francke, whose dedication and initiative were instrumental in reaching out to Floors High School through the Chairman, Romeo Syfers. Her efforts helped bridge the gap between the university and the school, laying the foundation for this exciting new chapter in the school’s athletic history.

Under Claudia’s guidance, along with the expertise of Daniel Melaat, the Backline Coach, and Rodrique Januarie, the Frontrow Coach, the clinic provided invaluable insights into the fundamentals of the game. The enthusiasm was palpable as players engaged in various drills, honing their skills and learning the intricacies of rugby in a supportive and empowering environment.

Moira Januarie, the Team Manager and Secretary of the Frances Baard Rugby Region, was also in attendance, adding her support to the event. Her presence underscored the commitment of the region to fostering female participation in rugby and encouraging young athletes to embrace the sport with passion.

The clinic not only focused on skill development but also on building a sense of camaraderie among the players. The girls were encouraged to work together, fostering teamwork and resilience – qualities that are essential both on and off the field.

As the day concluded, it was clear that the seeds of female rugby had been planted at Floors High School. The players left the field inspired, ready to embrace the challenges ahead. With the support of the SPU coaching team and the Frances Baard Rugby Region, the future of girls’ rugby at Floors High School looks bright.

This initiative is a testament to the power of community-driven sports development and the importance of providing opportunities for young female athletes. The rugby clinic was not just an event; it was a celebration of potential, empowerment, and the unwavering spirit of grassroots rugby in South Africa. As the girls lace up their boots for future practices, they carry with them the promise of a vibrant rugby community ready to grow and thrive.
