Minister Nzimande to launch 2019 science week in Kimberley

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande, will launch the 2019 instalment of National Science Week (NSW), the premier science engagement initiative on the Department of Science and Innovation’s calendar in Kimberley this coming Saturday.

This year’s launch event at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre, which starts at 09:00 and runs until 12:00, is a partnership with the Northern Cape Basic Education Department, Sol Plaatje University and the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).

NSW is an annual week-long celebration of science, engineering and technology, attracting thousands of learners and members of the public to workshops, science shows and lectures at universities, schools, science centres and public facilities countrywide.

As weather conditions continue to become more extreme, sea levels rise and wild animals are forced to migrate, the issue of climate change is in the spotlight. “Facing the harsh realities of climate change” is the theme for NSW 2019, serving as a call to the public to act to protect the planet.

According to research, the earth’s temperature has increased by 1°C above pre-industrial levels due to extreme carbon emissions being trapped in the earth’s atmosphere.

Last year’s Special Report on Global Warming by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that, if global heating continues to advance at the current rate, this increase is likely to reach 1,5°C between 2030 and 2052.

Over 2 000 learners from around the Northern Cape are expected to attend the launch, where over 100 exhibitions will empower not only the young but citizens of all ages about how climate change affects them and what they can do to protect the earth.

There will also be talks and workshops on various exciting concepts of science and technology. Similar activities will take place throughout the country during NSW, which runs from 29 July to 3 August.
