Preserving identity through language: SPU to host African Languages Symposium

SPU’s Faculty of Education will host a thought-leading African Languages Symposium on Friday at South Campus under the theme: “African Languages and Cultural Heritage: Preserving Identity Through Language Education in South Africa,” on 3 October 2025.

This one-day symposium, running from 08:30 to 15:30, will bring together researchers, educators, and language practitioners to explore the vital role of African languages in preserving cultural identity and shaping future-focused education practices.

The event aims to showcase cutting-edge research and developments in the field of African languages, highlight practical classroom strategies used in the pre-service training of future African language teachers, and contribute to national and institutional conversations about language, identity, and cultural heritage.

The symposium also underscores long-term collaboration with the Department of Education and the Pan South African Language Board, particularly in relation to teacher training initiatives such as the Mother Tongue-based Bilingual Education programme.

Please confirm attendance by Wednesday, 24 September 2025, by emailing Mr Gert Hanekom at gert.hanekom@spu.ac.za.
