SAICA appoints SPU’s CFO as Deputy Chair

We are delighted to announce that Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) Chief Financial Officer, Ms Annalene Marais, has been appointed as Deputy Chairperson for the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Central Region Public Sector Committee. In her three-year term, Ms Marais will support the chairperson in managing the Committee’s functions and liaise with the SAICA Public Sector Department on various initiatives.

The Committee’s primary focus areas include addressing ethical dilemmas, raising awareness on legislation, offering guidance, and promoting capacity building. It also advocates for professionalising the public sector, supports the Accounting Standards Board, and comments on amendments impacting the public sector.

Ms Marais expressed her commitment to advancing the goals and objectives of the Committee, stating, “I am honoured to have been elected as Deputy Chairperson of the SAICA Central Region Public Sector Committee. I believe that the application of the knowledge and experience gained through my involvement in these initiatives would also be of great value to Sol Plaatje University, in the fulfilment of my role as Chief Financial Officer.”

In her new role, Ms Marais will serve on project working and interest groups focusing on public sector matters, contribute to thought leadership, and participate in initiatives to enhance the professionalisation and turnaround of the public sector. Ms Marais also holds positions on the SAICA Central Region Council, District Committee, and Chartered Institute of Government Finance Audit and Risk Officers (CIGFARO) board, where she chairs the Audit and Risk Committee.

With her extensive experience, Ms Marais is set to gain a broader perspective on matters affecting the Public Finance Sector both nationally and internationally. She emphasises the importance of keeping the finance division of SPU up to date with developments in the Finance Sector, stating, “It is imperative that the finance division of SPU remain relevant and keep abreast of developments in the Finance Sector, to ultimately ensure a well-functioning, service-oriented and excellent SPU Finance Division.”
