Science camp opens doors for future innovators

On Monday 29 September 2025, Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) Arid Lands Node, hosted a Grade 11 Science Camp on Central Campus. SAEON is a long-term environmental observation and research facility of the National Research Foundation (NRF), with a mandate in environmental observation, data management and education outreach.

Through this partnership, learners were introduced to SPU’s STEM (Science, Technology, Economics and Mathematics) offerings, which stand as a beacon of innovation and academic excellence, reflecting the Faculty’s commitment to fostering a dynamic learning environment rooted in science, technology, mathematics and the 5IR.

Faculty academics from across the Departments of Computer Science and Information Technology, Mathematical Sciences, and Physical and Earth Sciences presented SPU’s cutting-edge programmes and niche focus areas. Mr Phumezo Ntlatywa (Computer Science and IT), Dr Siyabonga Dubazana (Mathematical Sciences), Dr Siyanda Mthembu (Chemistry), Dr Thendo Mafame (Geography), and Dr Obed Shirinda (Physics) encouraged learners to strengthen their mathematical foundations as a pathway to competitive science degrees and careers in science, technology and engineering.

In her opening remarks, Ms Phumudzo Ragimama, Science Education Officer at SAEON, encouraged learners to fully engage with the programme by asking questions and exploring SPU’s academic opportunities. She stressed that this knowledge would empower them to make informed and confident career choices.

Learners from Kimberley high schools Thabane, Emang Mmogo and Vuyolwethu participated in the camp. Mr Phumlani Zwane, from the Department of Physical and Earth Sciences (Geography), introduced them to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), demonstrating its applications along with land evaluation techniques using scientific instruments.

By hosting the camp at SPU, SAEON reinforces the University’s role as a leader in STEM education, offering inclusive and future-focused opportunities across Biological and Agricultural Sciences, Computer Science and Information Technology, Data Science, Mathematical Sciences and Physical and Earth Sciences.
