The South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) Economic Research Department recently visited Sol Plaatje University (SPU) as part of its ongoing public outreach programme, engaging directly with Economics postgraduate and third-year students, as well as academic staff within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.
The session formed part of SARB’s broader commitment to strengthening economic literacy, fostering academic partnerships, and creating awareness of career opportunities within the central banking environment.
The SARB delegation, comprising economists and representatives from its Economic Research Department and SARB Academy, was welcomed by Professor Pierre Joubert, Dean of Economic and Management Sciences, alongside Dr Christelle Meniago, Head of the Department of Accounting and Economics, who delivered the opening remarks.
The programme included an in-depth presentation on the mandate of the South African Reserve Bank, offering students a clearer understanding of its role in maintaining price stability, safeguarding financial stability, and contributing to sustainable economic growth. This was followed by an engaging question-and-answer session, where students actively interrogated key economic concepts and policy considerations.
A second session focused on career pathways within the SARB, highlighting opportunities available to graduates in economics and related fields. The delegation outlined the critical skills required in the sector, including analytical thinking, data interpretation, and a strong understanding of macroeconomic frameworks. Students were encouraged to consider careers in public sector economics, research, and policy development, with practical insights shared on entry routes and professional growth within the institution.
The interactive nature of the session created a dynamic learning environment, allowing students to engage directly with professionals working at the forefront of South Africa’s monetary policy and economic research landscape. Discussions reflected a strong interest among students in contributing meaningfully to national economic development through careers in institutions such as the SARB.
The programme reinforces the growing relationship between Sol Plaatje University and the South African Reserve Bank, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application, and preparing graduates to participate meaningfully in South Africa’s evolving economic landscape.
