SPU alumna Dimpho Maboee makes history with M&G 200 recognition

SPU proudly celebrates a historic milestone with the recognition of Dimpho Maboee as one of the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans 2025. She is the first SPU graduate to be honoured on this prestigious list, which annually highlights young leaders who are shaping the country’s future through innovation, impact, and influence.

Dimpho, who completed her Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences and Honours in Computer Science at SPU, is now pursuing her Master’s in e-Science. Her journey is marked by resilience and determination, from her early years in Ladybrand and Bloemfontein to becoming a young professional in technology and data science. She has represented South Africa internationally, competed in hackathons, and focused her research on issues that matter deeply to society, including food security, economic inclusion, and digital trust.

Reflecting on her time at SPU, Dimpho acknowledges how the University shaped her growth: “It was my first time being in a completely new environment, both exciting and overwhelming, but it helped me grow a lot, both personally and professionally.”

This milestone illustrates how SPU is changing lives and enabling brighter futures through the journeys of its graduates. Dimpho’s success shows how research and innovation can open new frontiers in data science, while also reflecting the student-centred environment that nurtures confidence and ambition. At the same time, her achievements embody the vision of a technologically advanced university, preparing graduates who are ready to use digital tools and knowledge to address pressing societal challenges.

On receiving the news of her selection, Dimpho shared: “It was a shock because I had no idea who nominated me, but the idea that someone saw my work and effort and thought it was worth this recognition meant so much to me. It reminded me that people are actually watching and looking at the work we do.”

Beyond her academic accomplishments, Dimpho’s story is also one of resilience. Having lost both her parents at a young age, she describes this recognition as carrying their legacy forward and a reminder that her journey matters. Today, she is laying the groundwork for a business in technology and agriculture, with the goal of using innovation to uplift communities and create opportunities for others. For Dimpho, the M&G recognition is not only about personal success, but also about representation: “If my story can encourage one young person, especially a girl, to pursue STEM, then I know I am on the right track.”

Her message to current SPU students carries the wisdom of her journey: “Don’t wait for the perfect moment – it does not exist. Start with what you have, stay curious, take risks, and never underestimate the power of your story. Where you come from is part of your strength, not your limitation.”

SPU congratulates Dimpho on this remarkable achievement and celebrates her as a shining example of the University’s vision to empower graduates who will make a lasting difference in their communities, their industries and the world.
