Renowned artist Professor Zakes Mda showcased his exceptional talent and captivating artistry in Kimberley, Northern Cape, on 23 November 2023, at the opening of his eagerly awaited solo exhibition, “Always The Sun,” at the William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG).
Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) Associate Professor of Museum and Heritage Studies, Prof Jesmael Mataga, delivered the opening speech for the much-anticipated exhibition. He emphasised the significance of art in exploring the human narrative. Prof Mataga discussed the importance of the commonplace, of museums and galleries, and of storytelling, describing museums and art as instruments of provocation.
Prof Mataga referenced a piece by Gesselle Baile in the WHAG proclaiming, “Art means never having to say sorry” and a banner at the gallery’s entrance declaring, “Art is for everyone.” He paid tribute to Mda’s remarkable body of work, spanning a decade. The impressive collection, featuring over 40 diverse pieces in size and texture, employs mixed media such as cloth, acrylic, oil on canvas, collage and three-dimensional objects. The artwork delves into everyday themes like work, relationships, conflict, music, healing and sexuality. This collection symbolises South African historical, contemporary and current challenges, as well as its heritage. The motifs include tributes to South African music and musicians, an acknowledgment of the Marikana massacre, and references to fiction, storytelling and Mda’s literary works. The exhibition is open until early 2024.
