SPU proudly celebrates another Master’s student who has been awarded the prestigious Abe Bailey Travel Bursary, one of South Africa’s most distinguished opportunities for young leaders.
The bursary recognises university students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance, leadership and a deep sense of social responsibility. Each year, recipients embark on a three-week educational tour of England and Scotland, engaging in conversations and experiences that broaden their understanding of leadership, democracy and service.
For Tshepiso Sebeela, this honour represents more than personal achievement. It reflects years of dedication to academic excellence, servant leadership and community impact. Since joining SPU, Tshepiso has served as a Peer Academic Advisor, mentoring fellow students and helping them navigate their academic journeys. She also participated in the Kopano Ya Dinaledi Leadership Programme, where she deepened her understanding of ethical leadership and social justice.
Beyond SPU, Tshepiso is actively involved in her community. She volunteers with Youth Opportunities South Africa, an NGO focused on youth development, and is part of her community’s Vigilante Group, a local initiative aimed at promoting safety and unity among residents. These experiences reflect her commitment to social change and align closely with the Abe Bailey Bursary’s values of civic engagement, empathy and transformative leadership.
“Applying for the Abe Bailey Bursary was a moment of restoration of vision, ambition and confidence,” Tshepiso reflects. “It reignited my commitment to making a meaningful difference in society. My goal is to use research and dialogue to bridge language and cultural divides, contributing to a just world united by a shared vision for positive change.”
When she learned of her selection, Tshepiso describes being overcome with gratitude: “I fell to my knees to thank my Lord for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, for SPU, for the leadership initiatives and job opportunities I’ve been given, for my family, lecturers and all the incredible people who shaped me to this moment,” she says.
She extends heartfelt appreciation to SPU’s leadership and academic staff for creating an environment where academic excellence and compassionate service thrive side by side.
As she prepares to join the 2025 Abe Bailey cohort on their journey to the United Kingdom, Tshepiso looks forward to engaging in cross-cultural conversations with other young leaders, exploring historic sites and learning how culture shapes human identity. “These exchanges will be invaluable in shaping my perspective as a community-builder,” she shares.
Tshepiso’s story reflects SPU’s commitment to developing graduates who excel academically, lead with social awareness, and serve with integrity and compassion to inspire lasting change in society.
