SPU director joins SAYAS

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) proudly congratulates Dr Moeketsi Mosia, Director of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Programme Development (CTLPD), on his prestigious appointment as a member of the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS). This respected organisation is committed to championing young scientists in South Africa, addressing both national and global societal challenges, and influencing policy decisions. SAYAS is dedicated to fostering scientific capacity throughout the country, promoting interdisciplinary collaborations among emerging talents, and offering mentorship from seasoned professionals in various fields.

Dr Mosia’s appointment to SAYAS was secured through his scholarly project, which examines the intersection of data science and student success, underlining his unwavering dedication to overcoming student success challenges through data analytics. His noteworthy contributions include leveraging machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as developing cloud computing-based solutions to enhance student outcomes.

“It’s an extraordinary honour to be selected as a member of SAYAS. During the inauguration, SAYAS’s co-chairperson emphasised, ‘These are the top 10 young scientists in the country.’ Membership in SAYAS recognises significant contributions to the advancement and practical application of science. I am thrilled to contribute to SAYAS’s vision, aiming to primarily use scientific thinking in service to society. My focus will be on leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence for public good and developing the capacity of South African youth in these areas,” says Dr Mosia.

Dr Mosia was officially welcomed into SAYAS at the Annual ASSAF Awards Ceremony in Cape Town on 9 November 2023.
