On 9 August 2024, Sol Plaatje University‘s (SPU) Campus Housing and Accommodation Unit (CAHAU) hosted a Women’s Day celebration under the theme “Healing, Protecting, and Becoming Her”. The event was designed to empower and uplift the female student community, reflecting SPU’s commitment to fostering an environment of inclusivity, support, and personal growth.
Ms Keabetswe Lebudi, a member of the Umnandi Hall of Residence House Committee, set the tone with opening remarks that emphasised the importance of the event’s theme. Keynote speaker Ms Tremaine Seekoei, founder of the Barefoot Campaign, an organisation affiliated with the Women-to-Women NGO, spoke passionately about the necessity of self-love and solidarity among women, reminding students that “love is safe, love doesn’t hurt, and love is not violent.”
A powerful testimonial was shared by Ms Lize Royalty, a survivor of gender-based violence, who inspired the audience to find strength in their struggles. “When you’re in a place of brokenness, you think you’re of no worth, but today, I see myself as someone who has overcome a lot,” she affirmed.
The event also featured an interactive “letting go” session, where students symbolically released their burdens, followed by a panel discussion on mental health, women’s empowerment, and leadership – topics that resonate with SPU’s mission to develop well-rounded graduates who can make meaningful contributions to society.
The celebration was further enriched by performances and showcases that added vibrancy to the event. It concluded with closing remarks from Dr Lulama Morajane, a lecturer in the Faculty of Education and warden of the Moroka Hall of Residence, who expressed gratitude to all participants and stakeholders for their contributions to the event’s success.
