SPU footballer shines on international stage

Nosipho Khumari, a student at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley, proudly represented South Africa at the CUCSA Region V Games, playing a crucial role in the national university team’s 3-0 victory over Botswana in the tournament’s final. She recently represented South Africa with distinction at the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Region V Games.

The football tournament took place at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria as part of the CUCSA Games that ran from July 8 to 12.

Nosipho’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as she played a crucial role in the national university squad’s success. In the finals against Botswana, she managed to score two pivotal goals, one of which was a remarkable header. Her contribution was instrumental in securing a 3-0 victory for her team, bringing pride not only to her university but also to her hometown of Kimberley.

Reflecting on her achievement, Nosipho told the DFA, “It only started to sink in after the game that I really scored in the finals. I felt so emotional, with a sense of joy and excitement, since it contributed to my team’s success. I felt motivated and proud of myself that I managed to achieve my goal of scoring at least one goal in the tournament.”

Nosipho’s triumphant return to Kimberley on July 13 was met with a warm and enthusiastic welcome from family, friends and the local sporting community. The outpouring of love and support at the airport left her overwhelmed with emotion, particularly when she saw her mother waiting for her.

“I felt seen, heard and valued,” Nosipho shared. “I felt like I’m home, surrounded by people who understand me, support me and love me unconditionally. Honestly speaking, the surprise welcome at the airport is a testament to human connection, a celebration of bonds that unite us, and a reminder that we are never alone.”

Looking ahead, Nosipho is setting her sights on future victories. She expressed her determination to excel in the Sasol League and aims to triumph in the national play-offs. Additionally, she is preparing for the University Sports South Africa (USSA) championships later this year.

Nosipho’s journey is a testament to dedication, hard work and the power of community support. Her achievements on the international stage have not only brought her personal satisfaction but also immense pride to Kimberley and Sol Plaatje University.
