In the early hours of 20 August 2022, Sol Plaatje University (SPU) hosted its annual Birthday Colour Run at the Windhoek Lager Park stadium, as part of the celebrations of SPU’s birthday. Runners could choose between running distances of 5km, 10km or 21.1km. SPU staff members, students as well members of the community of all ages participated in the fun festivities.

“The aim of the event is to promote a healthy lifestyle through running as an activity of choice, bringing diverse communities closer together, and strengthening ties between the University and surrounding communities. It is envisioned that this Colour Run will become the premier racing feature on the Northern Cape racing calendar and aid in promoting sport as a catalyst for progressive development in this province,” said Vice-Chancellor and Principal of SPU, Prof Andrew M Crouch, at the official opening of the race.

Dean of Student Affairs, Ms Nicole Morris affirmed that, “One of five priorities in Student Affairs is to deliver sporting excellence that compliments academic success in a well-balanced environment that encourages student-athletes to thrive and achieve their full potential.” SPU will continue to strive for excellence and will keep working towards cementing the university’s place in the province as well as the higher education sector.

Prof Crouch, Ms Morris and SPU Sports Officer, Mr Tshepo Masoeu, revealed the SPU Colour Run cake, and participants and their supporters enjoyed the many fun activities on offer. SPU Sports Mascot Gemmie entertained the crowd and kept them dancing throughout the day.

Dr Lorato Banda, President of Athletics Griqualand West (AGW) was also present. “The AGW is elated with the success of the SPU Birthday Colour Run on a very cold and windy morning. We look forward to partnering with the university and its sports department in future endeavours. We hope for an increase in participation over years from students, staff, and the broader Kimberley community,” he said.
