Sol Plaatje University (SPU) hosted the Lesedi La Afrika Fundraising Gala Dinner on Friday, 16 May 2025 – an elegant evening of generosity and solidarity under the theme “Enabling Brighter Futures for All.” The dinner served as a key fundraising initiative for the Lesedi La Afrika Endowment Fund, a long-term initiative to sustain the University’s future, empower its students and staff, and drive academic and institutional growth for generations to come.
In her keynote address, Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Debra Meyer, reflected on the transformative power of education and the shared responsibility to support it:
“At SPU, many of our students arrive with bold dreams but limited resources. Through funding, they gain access to the quality education they deserve – but we cannot do it alone. Your support enables us to change lives, strengthen research and innovation, build human capital, and expand our footprint. Your investment uplifts families, empowers communities and inspires generations. Together, we are enabling brighter futures for all.”
Chair of Council, Prof Randall Carolissen, expressed appreciation to supporters and reflected on SPU’s broader developmental impact:
“Since its establishment, SPU has played a catalytic role in the Northern Cape – from our unique academic offerings to revitalising the local economy. Your support helps shape the next generation of leaders, innovators and changemakers. Thank you for walking this journey with us.”
The programme was directed by Mr Johan ‘Spoed’ Smith, who ran a vibrant auction featuring artwork from local creatives. Among the standout items were a framed, signed photo collage of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, a signed SPU Varsity Shield rugby shirt by Jaiden Faviers – SPU’s first-ever Rookie of the Varsity Shield Tournament – and a shirt signed by the full debut Varsity Shield team. Guests also bid on a portrait of Luka Jantjie and other historical figures, pottery and fine artwork.
Raffle tickets offered guests the chance to win prizes, including vouchers from The Heights Restaurant and Bistro, Nare Boutique Hotel, Providence Creative and Royal Beauty Spa.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by Idols SA 2011 Top 3 finalist Ms Crushanda Forbes, whose soulful performance had guests singing and dancing along.
The audience also heard heartfelt testimonials from Mx Nonofo Quinton Oliphant, 2024–2025 SRC President, and Ms Mosima Mehlape, SPU’s Manager: Communication and Marketing, who spoke as a nominated participant in the 2025 Rising Stars Future Leaders Programme – a staff development initiative made possible through the Lesedi La Afrika Endowment Fund.
Director of Institutional Advancement, Ms Kashini Maistry, closed the evening with a sincere vote of thanks:
“Tonight marks the beginning of a deeper commitment to SPU’s long-term viability and excellence. Sustained giving is not only an investment in education – it is an investment in our collective future. Partner with us to grow this Fund and amplify the impact we can achieve together.”
SPU also acknowledges the creative contributions of local artists Ms Eden Storom, Mr Shane Mayongo, Mr Bonginkosi Mthalane and Mr Katlego Squire, whose work helped bring the evening to life.
