One of the conspicuous features of South Africa’s post-apartheid political history is the relative muteness, intellectual aloofness and neglect of the history and significance of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe. Given his towering political stature, outstanding contribution, and decisive role in setting the Africanist agenda for South Africa’s future, it is astonishing that so little is discussed about his life, work, and ideas. The apartheid regime did its utmost to impose and enforce statutory silence about Sobukwe. But, like cork pushed under water this was a strategically impossible mission. Sobukwe’s legacy will with time grow even more forcefully and pertinently. This book, from one of SA’s younger Africanist historians, Luvuyo Dondolo, is therefore strikingly felicitous and inspirational – beginning with the Foreword by Prof Kwesi Prah.
About the Author
Luvuyo Mthimkhulu Dondolo, is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of South Africa (UNISA). In 2022, he was the Ubuntu Dialogues Seminar Fellow housed by the University of Stellenbosch and Michigan State University. He was a Fulbright Scholar in residency at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania (US) for the 2016/17 academic year working on African American heritage scholarship. Prof Dondolo is also a former Rockefeller Scholarship holder and, as such, studied at Emory University in Atlanta, USA, to further his understanding of public history and heritage studies. He has published many book and journal chapters, and coauthored several books on heritage, public history, spatial plan justice and African intellectual tradition.
