Sol Plaatje University (SPU) formally marked the start of the FNB Varsity Shield Rugby 2026 season with a jersey handover and institutional send-off for the SPU Varsity Shield Rugby Team on Saturday, 7 February.
Held following the Vice-Chancellor’s Official Welcome Ceremony, and directed by Mr Tobile Gqili, Director: Academic Administration, the engagement brought together students, university leadership and the rugby team to formally acknowledge SPU’s participation in the Varsity Shield competition and to affirm the responsibilities attached to representing the university on a national sporting platform.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Debra Meyer, together with members of the executive management, formally handed over the playing jerseys to the team. The handover served as an institutional send-off, signalling the university’s endorsement as the team prepares to compete in the 2026 Varsity Shield season.
Addressing the team during the programme, the University Registrar and Acting Dean of Students, Dr Jody Cedras, emphasised the importance of balancing academic commitments with high-performance sport. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to structured academic support for student-athletes, noting that sporting excellence is pursued alongside academic responsibility.
On behalf of the team, the Vice Captain, Mr Tyron China presented Varsity Shield tournament supporter T-shirts to the Vice-Chancellor and the executive management. The gesture symbolised the team’s commitment to represent SPU with discipline, integrity and pride throughout the tournament, and to uphold the values of the institution both on and off the field.
In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor reflected on the significance of a young university competing on a national sporting platform of this scale. She noted that SPU’s participation in the Varsity Shield at this stage of its institutional development reflects steady growth and confidence, and forms part of the university’s broader trajectory of building excellence across academic, student and sporting life.
The engagement aligned with the national FNB Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield 2026 launch held earlier that day at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, which officially signalled the start of the new season and set the tone for the upcoming competition.
The FNB Varsity Shield 2026 season gets underway on Friday, 13 February, with SPU opening the campaign away against UKZN. This is followed by a home fixture against WSU on 20 February, away matches against CPUT on 27 February and UWC on 6 March, a home fixture against UFH on 13 March, an away encounter with Wits on 20 March, and a home fixture against Madibaz on 27 March.
