Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Rugby First Team made history by securing their place in the 2025 Varsity Shield League for the first time after back-to-back victories against Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Following an impressive performance at the USSA Tournament in Makhanda, which earned them a play-off spot, the team triumphed twice over TUT, with the latest victory on Monday, 2 September 2024, sealing a final score of SPU 20 – TUT 17.
A celebration event was held on Friday, 6 September 2024, where Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Andrew Crouch, applauded the team’s resilience and dedication: “Sport plays a vital role in development and unites communities. We have the talent to go all the way in the Varsity Cup, and we’ll support you every step of the way.”
Like the gemsbok, known for thriving in the harsh conditions of the Northern Cape, our Gemmies have demonstrated the athleticism, endurance, and teamwork needed to overcome any challenge. Vice-Captain TJ Madjiet echoed this sentiment, describing the team as a family, noting that just as gemsbok are gregarious and thrive in groups, teamwork made their dream work – strengthened by unwavering support from management, coaches, and the SPU Community.
Dean of Student Affairs, Ms Nicole Morris, reflected on the team’s determination: “You took up the challenge and made us all proud. As the first team to reach this milestone and qualify for the Varsity Shield, this will go down in the University’s history books. Congratulations on your achievement. The next stage will require a different mindset, strategy, and commitment, but know that we are behind you every step of the way.”
This victory is not only a proud moment for SPU but a triumph for Kimberley and the Northern Cape province. Many doubted whether such a young university could achieve this, but the Gemmies have proven that with perseverance and belief, anything is possible.
As SPU celebrates this historic win, the entire community stands proudly behind the team, looking forward to their continued success in the 2025 Varsity Shield.
