SPU Sport hosted a fun-filled and energising Sports Day on 8 March 2023 at the SPU South Campus Sport Precinct.
Students came in numbers to join in on the fun and waited eagerly to receive their funky SPU Sport t-shirt upon arrival.
The programme for the day started with SPU Sport teams parading in their regalia showcasing the various SPU sporting codes; yes, we have 17 sports codes!
The #GemmieFire set the field alight as students joined in on sing and dance as SPU’s mascot, Gemmie, entertained the crowd. The crowd was also delighted by SPU’s hip-hop dancers and cheerleading team.
Ms Nicole Morris, Dean of Student Affairs, welcomed all first-year and returning students, staff and the rivals for the day – the Hungry Lions Football Club – to the event.
“This sports day was organised with YOU the first year in mind, as Sol Plaatje University endeavours to become a sporting university of choice in South Africa. It is important that sport forms a pivotal role in our student programmes at the university, having recently enacted our sport strategy as part of our accelerated sports growth model at the university. It is imperative that students are introduced to a comprehensive sports programme and offering which enables maximised participation in both recreational and competitive sports,” Ms Morris said.
She added: “Our vision is to create an environment that enables sporting excellence whilst complimenting academic success at the university. Through a balanced approach, DSA hopes to foster a nurturing environment which aids the development of our students holistically. We hope to encourage and embrace unity and togetherness in propelling and promoting a healthy and vibrant student culture on campus through sports.”
The Hungry Lions FC played against the SPU FC in a tough but thrilling friendly game. SPU players, Kabelo Makgoposhane and Neo Morris both scored the first goals for the team, however the Hungry Lions FC took the winning title winning 5 – 2.
The SPU Sport office invites all students to participate in various sporting codes offered by the university.
