Sol Plaatje University (SPU) will host “Places in Me” – A Photovoice Exhibition with the !Xun and Khwe of Platfontein in July and August 2023.
The exhibition is a result of collaborative efforts between an international research team, COSMO-ART, two Platfontein-based NGOs, the Southern African San Development Organisation (SASDO), San Community Development (SANCD) and SPU.
The project is funded and supported by IFAS-Recherche, McGregor Museum, and the Northern Cape Tourism Authority.
The objective of this project is to heighten visibility and awareness on the perspectives that young people in Platfontein have in South African society, through their eyes in the place they live.
Equipped with cameras, the project documented different aspects of their local environment that are important, relevant, and interesting to them. Then, interviews conducted in 2022 made it possible to collect the authors’ points of view on their pictures.
The exhibition will include a dialogue between photos and expressions by the nine young women and men who took part in the photovoice project.
The photographs and voices of Platfontein’s young people speak of beauty, suffering, aspirations, disappointments, and of shifting identities. In this visual exploration, the images capture and convey the individual perspectives of the authors, how they see themselves, how they define and relate to the world, and what they perceive as important or different.
Opening dates for exhibitions will take place on 1 July 2023 at the !Xunkhwesa Combined School in Platfontein at 11h00, with the Kajundu Dance Group Performance, and will conclude on 6 July 2023.
On 7 July 2023 the exhibition will take place at SPU, at 18h00, with a Wokuri Dance Group Performance. The exhibition will run until 31 August 2023.
