SPU Sport in partnership with the Northern Cape Authority and the Northern Cape Department: Sports, Arts, and Culture, are set to host a High-Performance Sport Symposium. Sports experts will present key learnings on the importance of integrating health and high-performance training methods, with a focus on supporting the well-being of athletes and coaches to enable sustained, high-quality outputs. The symposium will be hosted at the SPU South Campus Multipurpose Hall on 21 September 2023.
SPU is celebrating 10 years of excellence and continues to strive to be amongst the preferred choices for talented athletes in South Africa by creating beneficial environments for elite athletes who make use of our state-of-the-art sports facilities. This is particularly instrumental and important in aiding young, talented student-athletes within the Northern Cape and with the appropriate support systems they can achieve their full potential with the goal of contributing to Team South Africa.
Earlier this year, SPU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Andrew Crouch, joined by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) Commissioner, Ms Jodi Scholtz, officially unveiled the SPU Sport Precinct. This first-of-its-kind facility in the Northern Cape is situated in the heart of Kimberley. The multipurpose Sport Precinct offers an array of sporting amenities for a wide range of sporting codes including football, netball, hockey, tennis, basketball, rugby, cricket, and volleyball. The facility not only elevates SPU’s sports offering and excellence but also benefits the broader Northern Cape community.
Sport managers, coaches, administrators, and sport scientists’ personnel will be able to cultivate an environment which is conducive for a well prepared and well-trained athlete. This allows athletes to be competitive at all levels of participation. The sports community from the Northern Cape will have an opportunity to share valuable insights about the sporting environment in South Africa with various Sport Scientists and Sport Directors, with the aim of building a high-performance culture. The presenters will address various pivotal subject matters from a broad spectrum of organisations and institutions including areas of High-Performance Sport Management, High Performance Coaching Systems, Mental Health and the role of Sport Psychology, Talent Identification Pathways, and systems, as well as from Drug Free Sport South Africa.
