SPU Vice-Chancellor Recognised in Eldorado Park Community-Led Art Initiative

Sol Plaatje University Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Debra Meyer, has been featured in a public mural in Eldorado Park, south-west of Johannesburg, as part of a community-led initiative recognising individuals who contribute meaningfully to society.

The mural forms part of a partnership between EldosFM, a community radio broadcaster that advocates for nation building, environmental justice and positive social change, and the Go Green Go Clean project, a local non-profit focused on environmental restoration and community upliftment.

Located at Edward Baatjies Street in Extension 8, the site was previously underutilised and affected by waste accumulation and environmental neglect, which posed safety concerns for the surrounding community. Through the efforts of Go Green Go Clean, led by founder Rashid Juma, the space has been rehabilitated into a clean and accessible environment, with ongoing work to develop it as an eco-tourism walkway and community art space.

The artwork, created by artist Charlton Brown as part of this initiative, depicts several community figures alongside Professor Meyer.

Speaking with EldosFM Station Manager and co-founder Lorreal Ferris, the mural series is positioned as an initiative to recognise individuals from the community who lead by example, strengthening awareness of local leadership and recognition of its impact.

This recognition reflects the role of community-led initiatives in transforming public spaces and affirming dignity and contribution.
