SPU welcomes first researcher in the Centre for Global Change

SPU is proud to announce the appointment of Dr Siviwe Odwa Malongweni as the first researcher to join the newly renamed Centre for Global Change (CGC), formerly known as the Risk and Vulnerability Science Centre.

Dr Malongweni’s role as the Special Science Envoy for the youth of South Africa, appointed by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), is one of her most notable achievements. As a passionate advocate for access to education, she champions opportunities for children from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Her work as the Special Science Envoy positions her as a vital role model, inspiring the next generation of scientists and encouraging them to seek further studies and bursary opportunities.

Her leadership in this role complements her extensive background as an Agricultural Soil, Earth, and Climate Scientist, and an Environmental Sustainability Expert. With over five years of experience in leading climate risk and adaptation research within agricultural systems, Dr Malongweni is known for her ability to foster transformative change on both African and international platforms. Her contributions to nature conservation, soil health, climate change assessments, and sustainable agriculture span several regions, including South Africa, Kenya, Japan, and South America.

SPU warmly welcomes Dr Malongweni to the CGC. Her expertise and leadership, both as a scientist and as an ambassador for STEM education, align with the university’s mission to contribute to sustainable development and make a meaningful impact within the region and beyond. We eagerly look forward to the innovative research and positive change she will drive through her work at the CGC.
