Dr Frederick Botha, an Afrikaans lecturer in the School of Humanities, has been elected a member of the Council of the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (South African Academy for Science and Arts).

The Academy is a multidisciplinary organisation that promotes science, technology and literature in Afrikaans and the arts. Dr Botha has confederated to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and the Free State Working Community.

Dr Botha is honoured to be elected a member of the Academy and states that this is a major highlight in his academic career.

“As an organisation that promotes the use and quality of Afrikaans, it is not only valuable to me as an Afrikaans academic to gain membership, but it is also a privilege to be part of the Academy that was founded in 1909. I hope that my involvement in the Academy’s activities will benefit Afrikaans and the language department in our School and the University,” he said.

Dr Botha also serves on the editorial board of Stilet, the official journal of the Afrikaanse Letterkundevereniging (Afrikaans Literature Society).

Sol Plaatje University congratulates Dr Botha on this achievement and wishes him the best of luck during his tenure.
