Sol Plaatje University (SPU) proudly commemorated the symbolic merger of Ra-Thaga and Mhudi Hall of Residences, a union rich in historical significance and aligned with the values of love, courage, and unity reflected in Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje’s novel, Mhudi. The event, held on Saturday, 21 September 2024 symbolised the joining of these residences into a unified living and learning environment for SPU students.
The merger was formalised with vows and pledges exchanged between the two residences, signed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Ms Nicole Morris, and the Director of Institutional Advancement, Ms Kashini Maistry. This commitment reflects their shared dedication to collaboration and progress, which will guide the students living in the newly named Ra-Thaga Mhudi Hall.
The event also provided an opportunity for students to explore the historical significance of the residences’ names while embracing SPU’s commitment to a collaborative and supportive community. It honoured Solomon Plaatje’s vision of unity, resilience, and cooperation, values that will continue to inspire students to live in solidarity and face challenges with courage and determination.
This momentous celebration further solidifies SPU’s mission to promote democratic practice and social justice, ensuring that Plaatje’s enduring legacy continues to inspire future generations.
