Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is proud to announce the launch of the Arid Region Water Research Centre (ARWRC), taking place on 14 April 2025.
In partnership with the Water Research Commission (WRC), SPU aims to advance scientific knowledge, develop practical solutions, and promote sustainable water management in South Africa’s arid regions – particularly in the Northern Cape.
Water scarcity is an escalating concern across the province, where limited rainfall, rising temperatures, and aging infrastructure continue to threaten health, livelihoods, and long-term development. Recent research at SPU has underscored the urgent need for robust, science-led interventions.
The ARWRC marks a significant milestone for SPU. The Centre will serve as a national hub for interdisciplinary water research, with a focus on:
- Water quality, sanitation and public health
- Groundwater and alternative water sources
- The Water-Energy-Food nexus
- Climate change resilience in arid environments
- Indigenous knowledge systems and community engagement
Beyond research, the Centre will also support postgraduate training, policy development and knowledge exchange through collaboration with government, academia and industry stakeholders.
The official launch event will bring together key role players from across the water sector to mark this important step forward – for SPU and for the future of sustainable development in arid regions.
