Youth Month may have passed, but the work of amplifying youth voices cannot be confined to a single month.
At SPU, we believe that commemorating youth is not a one-off event – it’s a continuous commitment to recognising the power, resilience and leadership of young people shaping our present and future.
As part of our ongoing UNMUTED digital series, we continue to spotlight bold student voices that reflect this spirit. Today, we amplify the journey of Jeffrey Mosese – a student leader whose story speaks to courage, care and the kind of change that starts from within.
Jeffrey Mosese is a passionate higher education practitioner, educator and sustainability advocate at SPU. He currently serves as a Governance Officer in the Division of Student Affairs, where he also coordinates the Green Campus Initiative. His academic and professional focus lies at the intersection of education, sustainability and curriculum transformation.
Earlier this year, Jeffrey graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Education at SPU’s 10th Graduation Ceremony, where he was also honoured as the Best Performing Student in Teaching Practice. He is now pursuing a B.Ed. Honours in Curriculum Studies – driven by a desire to build more relevant and empowering learning environments.
But Jeffrey’s journey at SPU has gone far beyond the classroom.
From Floor Representative to Peer Mentor, Green Campus Secretary, Peer Academic Advisor, Club Chairperson and now full-time staff member – his roles have spanned leadership, mentorship and advocacy. Through these, he’s come to understand that SPU is not just a place of learning, but as a space for discovery, resilience and responsibility.
“SPU is more than just a university,” he says. “It’s a space to grow into yourself – to figure out who you are and what you stand for.”
Jeffrey has led SPU delegations to national platforms such as the Green Campus Conference, walking away with awards for team spirit and creativity. These moments are meaningful not only for the accolades, but for what they represent: hard work, late nights, doubts and unwavering drive.
What fuels him is the belief that change is not a concept – it’s a responsibility. He dreams of systems that support students holistically:
- Mental health care that feels human, not transactional
- Residences that uphold both sustainability and dignity
- Spaces where queer students can feel safe, seen and celebrated
“Being a student at SPU is layered,” he explains. “We show up while dealing with trauma, financial strain, identity challenges – and we still lead, organise and succeed. But it’s not without cost.”
Jeffrey’s story is the essence of what UNMUTED stands for – courageous, clear-eyed and committed to change.
As we prepare for tomorrow’s Youth Month Dialogue under the theme “Skills for the Changing World,” we are reminded that leadership doesn’t always come with a title – sometimes it begins with simply choosing to show up.
