SPU congratulates Gobonamang Merahe, Student Development Officer in the Division of Student Affairs, on his appointment to the Council of the William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) in Kimberley, one of South Africa’s premier national art museums.
This appointment highlights the calibre of SPU staff whose leadership and expertise are being recognised beyond the University, contributing meaningfully to the communities from which they come.
Mr Merahe also serves on WHAG’s Human Resource Management Committee, where he helps oversee the Gallery’s human resource functions.
Mr Merahe brings a solid track record of leadership and governance across various institutional platforms. He previously served as SRC Secretary-General and participated in key university structures at the University of the Western Cape, including Council, Senate, Institutional Forum, Executive Committee of Council (EXCO) and the Senior Appointment Committee of Council (SACC). At SPU, he plays a pivotal role in student development by coordinating leadership and co-curricular programmes, providing oversight of governance structures, and implementing interventions that enhance student success and engagement. His work in building leadership capacity, fostering graduate attributes and promoting ethical governance directly mirrors the values and expectations of his role on the WHAG Council.
His academic grounding further affirms his contribution: Mr Merahe holds an MBA, a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration and a BCom degree. His MBA dissertation, titled “Corporate Governance Implementation at Sol Plaatje University”, offers valuable insights into institutional governance practices – reinforcing SPU’s focus on ethical leadership and community-engaged governance.
Reflecting on the appointment, Merahe said, “I’m passionate about providing strategic direction to organisations to ensure they achieve their goals and meet the needs of their stakeholders, particularly the public affected by an organisation’s decisions. This appointment allows me to contribute my expertise toward safeguarding the art gallery and enhancing the cultural landscape of our city.”
“It’s important to give back to my community because I am first a community member before I’m a professional,” he added. “One way or another, I’m affected by what happens here, and I want to be part of the positive change.”
In his role on the WHAG Council, Mr Merahe contributes to effective oversight, strategic alignment, risk and performance monitoring and ensuring compliance with legislation and governance frameworks. He applies his strong understanding of governance and his ability to weigh options objectively, while promoting an integrated approach to advancing public institutions.
His strengths include project and financial management, stakeholder engagement, consultative leadership and effective communication – attributes that support both WHAG’s governance needs and SPU’s strategic vision of innovation, development and community partnership.
Mr Merahe’s appointment may be a professional achievement; however, it is also a full-circle moment that affirms the power of scholarship grounded in institutional experience. His MBA research on corporate governance at Sol Plaatje University offered a critical lens on the very systems he now helps strengthen at a national level. His journey demonstrates how academic insight, professional contribution, and community engagement can align to advance public institutions meaningfully.
